I’m Tommy. I grew up in Australia, but I am passionate about Chinese culture. My friend Ling, a Chinese cultural dancer, shares her love for the dragon dance with me.
The dragon dance is a centuries-old tradition in China, symbolizing power, strength, and good luck. During special occasions like Chinese New Year or cultural celebrations, Ling and her group perform the dragon dance to bring blessings to the community. The dragon figure is made up of colorful fabric, and a team of skilled dancers holds it during the dance. It moves gracefully, weaving and swaying like a living creature. Throughout the performance, everyone can hear the rhythmic beat of drums and cymbals, creating an electrifying atmosphere. As a dancer in the dragon’s tail, Ling feels a profound connection with the ancient art and her fellow performers.
I watched them last year, and it was incredible to see coordinated movements and energy breathe life into the dragon. The dragon dance represented unity and harmony as they worked as a team to bring joy and positive energy to everyone around them. I was smiling the whole time. It was a privilege to be part of the audience.
