What is Stress?

Stress is our natural response to situations where control slips through our fingers. This might make us feel more worried, make our hearts beat faster, and disturb our regular sleep. It’s our body’s way of saying something is not quite right.

Stress can stem from various sources. It often arises when plans fall through or routines are disrupted due to unexpected problems. This is how stress manifests. These are things like a broken car, internet interruptions on the day of your virtual presentation, a partner changing their mind after committing to doing something with you, unforeseen expenses, and so on.

We can always manage stress, though, provided that we have the know-how. What works for many is taking a break. It means stepping back from the situation and allowing ourselves time to recharge. When things get tough, find ways to feel calm—whether it’s through a warm bath, taking a walk, listening to music, or any method that suits you best.

Luke, a 36-year-old marketing manager, shared his stress management strategies on Quora. He explained how he uses all his leave credits to travel to relaxing places, even in the middle of an important project. Upon returning, he’s more productive and efficient, completing the project three times faster than if he hadn’t taken a break.

Like Luke, who found that a bit of travel can do wonders for productivity. Stress is normal, but dealing with it doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s all about finding what works for you and remembering that control is within reach.
